Final Draft
During my first semester of ceramics I was just focused on trying to use the wheel. Because of this, I never spent very much time glazing. I would just quickly dip my projects in a glaze and call it good. This semester I started to spend more time glazing so I have learned a lot of new glazing techniques. One technique that I particularly like is just painting designs onto my projects. After I tried this I started to make more of these types of projects, so I decided to choose designs and patterns as my theme.
The way I make the projects is by starting off throwing them on the wheel. I mostly used clay, but I did also try using porcelain. I tried to make my projects look very simple so that the projects themselves wouldn't take away from the glaze designs. Depending on what I wanted the over look to be I would choose different colors. For example, if I wanted a project to have a lot of contrast I would choose to use the black glaze.
I like this type of glazing because it makes it so I am able to incorporate my drawing and painting skills into ceramics. I have been drawing and paining my whole life, but ceramics is fairly new to me, so being able to combine these art forms makes it easier for me to make ceramics projects that I am happy with. Also, when I am on the wheel I like to make simple projects, so by painting these patterns and designs on them I am able to make the projects look more interesting an give them more personality.
Although I have taken ceramics before, it never occurred to me that I could bring my drawing and painting skills into my ceramics projects. I really like the fact that I am able to make my projects look more complex by adding surface designs to them.

Rough Draft
During my first semester of ceramics I was focused on just trying to learn how to use the wheel, so I would just quickly dip my projects in the glaze. This semester I have started to spend more time glazing, so I have learned a lot of new glazing techniques. I tried painting a floral design on one of the plates I made and I really like the way it turned out, so I decided to choose that as my theme.
I have also been trying out different types of glazing on my projects. After trying several different glazing techniques I found out that I liked coming up with patterns and painting them on my projects. I have been making bowls and plates with various designs and patterns painted on them.
The plates or bowls themselves are pretty easy to make. I throw them on the wheel first. I have been trying to make my projects very simple so that the project itself doesn't take away from the designs. After they come out of the bisque kiln I just paint the designs on them.

Although I have taken ceramics before, it never even occurred to me that I could glaze my projects in different ways. I especially like painting the designs on plates because they are so simple to start with, but by adding a design they become more complex. Before I was so caught up in trying to make things on the wheel that I never even thought to try different ways of glazing, but now I am able to take my other art skills and apply them to ceramics. I have made a lot of progress since my freshman year when I first took this class, and I am glad I took it again.

Main Idea
This semester I have been experimenting with different glazing techniques. I found that I enjoy painting designs on to my projects because it makes my otherwise simple projects look more intricate.

At first I was thinking my theme could be simplicity, but now I think I want to try to incorporate the floral designs that I painted on my plates somehow.
This year I expected to make projects that would look better than my first semester projects from freshman year, and I think I have learned how to do that. I have improved upon the skill of centering and also in making my projects thinner. I have learned about and used art elements such as color, shape, space, and texture in my pieces. Also, I have learned to be more creative, especially when it comes to glazing techniques and the shapes of my projects.
I have put a lot of effort into this class because I really want to become better at ceramics. I am always on task in class and I focus on getting the required projects done first. I also help out the beginners a lot. I always clean up my own workspace and I do my cleaning job at the end of the day.
Next quarter I would like to relearn how to make a lidded project. I would also like to try to make a mug. So far this year I have gotten better at making bigger, taller projects, but I think I can still work on making even bigger, taller ones.
